Southwind aims to provide ‘ultimate Southern hunting experience’

tim-smith-mugHunting is a way of life in southwest Georgia, and at Southwind Plantation in Decatur County, they aim to give outdoorsmen the “ultimate Southern hunting experience.”

“We wanted to bring something unique to the Bainbridge area,” owner Tim Smith said.

When Smith began developing Southwind Plantation in 1992, it covered only 170 acres. Currently, the plantation is more than 2,000 acres, has lodging for 38 people and employs more than 30 people in the busy hunting season.

“I think we do a good job of bringing people to Decatur County who might not otherwise visit our area,” Smith said.

Southwind is a reservation-only hunting lodge where hunting fans can test their skills on Southwind’s vast natural fields. Smith said the plantation specializes on quail hunts, but also features opportunities for hunting ducks, turkey, deer and other game.

Hunters are accompanied by trained, professional hunting guides, and can travel into the field on either Jeeps or horse-drawn carriages. Hunters can bring their own dogs, or use some of the trained canines on site.

“Some people like the horse-drawn carriages because it has that authentic Southern feel,” Smith said. “We try to offer opportunities for both seasoned hunters, as well as those who have never done hunting in their lives.”

In addition to the hunting activities, the plantation also features target shooting areas — both clay targets and fixed targets — and opportunities for fishing. Smith said Southwind is also branching out to expand its off-hunting-season activities.

The lodges and other buildings can be rented out for corporate retreats, family reunions, and weddings.

“We have made friends all across the country who have visited Southwind,” Smith said. “I love meeting people, which makes it a very rewarding business. Word of mouth has been tremendous for us.”

Southwind also is one of the few Orvis dual endorsed wingshooting and fly fishing lodges in the country. Orvis is a leader in hunting equipment, gear and clothing.

“We’ve been able to teach people who have never hunted before,” Smith said. “It’s wonderful to give them an opportunity to get outside and enjoy God’s green earth.

“We just look forward to anyone in the community who would like the chance to experience our hunts. Just give us a call.”
